Improve safety on the A682 Gisburn to Blacko Road

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to improve safety on the A682 Gisburn to Blacko stretch. It is in the top ten worst in the COUNTRY for fatalities. It is the only UK road "in the highest-risk category" of EuroRAP’s 2007survey. As found on www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motoring/britain-s-most-dangerous-road. We ask that there is a reduction in the speed limit and ask for increased signage. Improved signage is needed in order to highlight that the road has lots of twists and turns and also blind spots. There needs to be increased signage for drivers to be more aware of the risks on the road.

I was involved in a head-on collision with another car in 2002. The driver in the other car was overtaking around the bed and the combined speed was a collision at 100mph. I survived the crash, unfortunately the other driver died. I was not unscathed; I shattered my patella and was knocked out on impact. The result of which meant that I suffered lesions on brain which caused epilepsy. Thankfully, the car I was driving saved my life and I also had my seat-belt on. There have been more fatalities on this road including bikers and car drivers and this is not acceptable. Something has to be done, please help by signing this petition

Council response

Thank you for submitting your petition requesting a safety review of the A682 Gisburn to Blacko road, including consideration of a reduction in the speed limit and increased signage.

Officers have carried out a review of road safety concerns on the A682 Gisburn to Blacko Road and are aware that there has been a high record of serious collisions on the A682 between Blacko and Gisburn for a number of years. Highway officers have continued to monitor the impact of measures which have been introduced over the last 10 years to improve road safety at this location.

Previous assessments of the accident information have shown that many of the incidents are the result of dangerous overtaking manoeuvres and drivers losing control at high speeds. Officers have given consideration to and taken measures to try to reduce these incidents by introducing new road markings and signage the aim of which are to encourage appropriate speeds. Additional measures have also been taken through the introduction of alerts to drivers regarding upcoming bends in order to discourage inappropriate overtaking.

Officers have continued to maintain and improve these measures and have recently extended the double white centre line system at key points to further discourage inappropriate overtaking.

Consideration is currently being given to a proposal to introduce a 40mph speed limit buffer zone as vehicles approach Blacko on the A682 to encourage drivers to slow down on approach to the built up area and to encourage drivers to adhere to the 30mph through the village.

The measures which have been introduced have resulted in a reduction in the number of incidents, however officers continue to monitor the situation and liaise with Lancashire Constabulary with regards to further preventative measures.
