Upgrade Blackpool Road in Preston to a dual carriageway

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to upgrade Blackpool Road in Preston to a dual carriageway from the roundabout with the A59 (New Hall Lane) to the junction with the A6.

Blackpool Road currently suffers with very unreliable journey times during peak hours, especially for people trying to access Deepdale Retail Park. Because of this, people are choosing to use Ronaldsway instead which is an ‘Execpt for access’ road which isn’t designed to carry high levels of traffic. We believe Blackpool Road can be converted to dual carriageway because of the wide grass verges at either side of the road and this is what should be done to resolve the problem.

Council response

The county council have no plans at this time to change the above section of Blackpool Road to a dual carriageway.

We are committed to channeling our resources to our ongoing City Deal Projects, which include the construction of three new roads, including the Broughton Bypass, Preston Western Distributor and East/West link road, Penwortham Bypass as well as the widening of the A582. This will transform central Lancashire, creating thousands of new jobs and homes, while increasing the size of the local economy by £1 billion. The deal was signed in September 2013 and is a ten year programme and is the single largest investment programme to improve Preston's road network for a generation or more. .

Together these and other transport improvements being delivered by the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal represent an investment of well over a third of a billion pounds to support the considerable commercial and residential growth in this part of Lancashire.
