SIGN THIS PETITION TO CALL FOR A DIRECT DEDICATED CYCLE ROUTE BETWEEN HEYSHAM AND LANCASTER

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to put in place a direct dedicated cycle route between the centre of Heysham and Lancaster, by linking Snatchems, by the River Lune, to Meldon Road and Abingdon Grove across Heysham Moss. The proposed route would run via Morecambe and Heysham Footpath 27 (Moss Lane), Heaton-with-Oxcliffe Footpath 4, Moss Road (U19038) and Heaton-with Oxcliffe Footpath 3. This should be completed within the same timescales as the M6 link road.

Cyclists commuting between Heysham and Lancaster must either take a long cycle path route via Morecambe or else use roads from Heysham to Salt Ayre. These road routes are not safe enough for family cycling and are not direct, as they must necessarily pass on either side of Heysham Moss.
Much of the necessary infrastructure is already in place for a direct cycle route between Heysham and Lancaster; which includes a bridge over the railway line on Morecambe and Heysham Footpath 27 (Moss Lane). The completion of this route would involve reclassifying footpaths and upgrading the surface of a 1350 metre length of path between Moss Road and Abingdon Grove. It would also be beneficial to reclassify and upgrade the short path between the Bypass and Snatchems on Lancaster Road.
As well as being safer, this dedicated route would reduce the journey from the centre of Heysham to Salt Ayre sports centre by a full mile from 4.5 to 3.5 miles, making this valuable facility accessible to Heysham families. Given that the completion of the M6 link road is intended to transfer heavy goods vehicle traffic along the Lancaster / Morecambe Bypass, this already much needed off-road route should be now put in place within the same timescales.
