Pedestrian crossing - A59 at Brockholes Brow/Tickled Trout Hotel, Preston

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to install a pedestrian crossing on the A59 at Brockholes Brow/Tickled Trout Hotel. We also ask the council to reduce the speed limit and remove the middle lane as it is a potential hazard.

We feel this would help to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on the road.

Council response

Thank you for submitting this e-petition.

The current 40mph speed limit on this section of Brockholes Brow is considered to be appropriate given the none residential nature of the road. The police have verbally confirmed that they do not consider a lower speed limit appropriate on this road.

The middle lane is not considered to be hazardous as the opposing traffic to this lane is primarily prohibited from entering the middle lane by the solid white line. Removing the middle lane would result in traffic congestion for the locality whilst not addressing any road safety issue. Until the recent unfortunate fatal accident there has been no injury accident occurring as a result of general moving traffic using the middle lane. We therefore do not recommend that the middle lane is removed.

As the highway authority we have a finite budget for traffic related schemes and a responsibility to prioritise our resources that best serve the residents and road users in Lancashire. Our current priority is to target those resources at locations with a proven road safety issue which is determined by significant numbers of injury accidents, in addition to schemes that will contribute to the improvement of the wider highway network. The impact of this is that we are unable to recommend a pedestrian crossing facility on the A59 at the Brockholes Brow/Tickled Trout Hotel as the injury accident record involving pedestrians is good with no incidents occurring in the past 5 years
