Higher Walton Rd Traffic Calming

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to install traffic calming measures onto Higher Walton Rd, specifically near the recreation centre; speed bumps, ramps or traffic islands.

Drivers speed down the road despite the 30 limit, there is an entrance to the recreation centre which is used by families, also a nursery and a primary school further down the road.

There have been near misses and recently an incident involving a motorcyclist, there needs to be more calming measures implemented to reduce the risk to the surrounding familes and children using and living in the area.

Council response

As the highway authority we have a finite budget for traffic related schemes and a responsibility to prioritise our resources that best serve the residents and road users in Lancashire. Our current priority is to target those resources at locations with a proven road safety issue which is determined by significant numbers of injury accidents, in addition to schemes that will contribute to the improvement of the wider highway network. There has been one recorded slight injury accident on Higher Walton Road within the last 5 years due to excessive vehicle speeds. The impact of this review is that officers are unable to support the request for the introduction of traffic calming measures at this location, at the current time.

However, the A675 Higher Walton Road currently receives enforcement in the form of mobile speed camera operations, this means that mobile enforcement is undertaken at many different locations along its length (subject to various safety, legal and technical checks). Highway officers have also highlighted the specific concerns of this petition to the police.

Arrangements have also been made for a road sign to be installed on Higher Walton Road, which has the text, "Community Concern Speed Area", to remind drivers to think about the speed they are driving at. The dimensions of the sign are 840mm x 595mm.
