The High Sheriff

The Office of High Sheriff is an independent non-political Royal appointment for 12 months. There are 55 High Sheriffs serving the counties of England and Wales each year. Whilst the duties of the role have evolved over time, supporting the Crown and the Judiciary remain central elements of the role today. In addition, High Sheriffs actively lend support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the emergency services and to the voluntary sector. The post is voluntary and unremunerated.

The Monarch selects the High Sheriff of Lancashire in March each year, after which, they are sworn-in at an Installation Ceremony which takes place at County Hall hosted by the Chairman of the County Council.

In June, an important service takes place at the Priory Church in Lancaster, followed by an ancient ceremony dating back over 400 years which sees the High Sheriff hang a Shield displaying his/her Coat of Arms in the Shire Hall at Lancaster Castle.
