County Councillor Allowances and Payments
Lancashire County Councillors are not employees and they do not receive a salary for the work they carry out for the people of Lancashire.
However, the county council does make payments to councillors in accordance with an allowance scheme approved by the council. The council can only make amendments to the scheme having received advice and recommendations from its Independent Remuneration Panel (IRP). This is under the provisions of the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003.
In summary, each councillor receives a basic allowance and travel allowances are payable where expenditure has necessarily been incurred in the performance of an approved duty. Additional allowances are paid to Cabinet Members, committee Chairs and other key county councillors; this is to reflect their special responsibilities.
Attached (below) is a copy of the 2024/25 Scheme that was last amended and approved by the Full Council on 14 March 2024. Previous Schemes and details of the payments made to county councillors in previous years are also attached below. Other years' figures are available on request, please ring 01772 534580.
