Speeding in Newchurch

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to provide traffic calming measures on Newchurch Road, Rossendale. Speed cameras preferably.

The speed of cars coming over Newchurch Rd is sometimes in excess of 70mph especially early and late evenings. Cars racing one another regardless of other road users.

Council response

In relation to concerns about the speed of traffic, the council work closely with the Police as part of the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership to target locations where casualties and speeds are higher. If there is an evidenced safety issue, we will look to introduce appropriate mitigation measures.

Having assessed Newchurch Road, we have previously prioritised the instalment of temporary signage to help remind drivers to think about their speed between Oct-Dec 2019, and again from Apr-Jun 2020 to maximise the effect of the message, though there are currently no plans to install physical traffic calming measures at this location. However, there is a community toolkit on our website (link below) which gives examples of how local residents can raise awareness of road safety issues in their local area:

If residents witness regular incidents of nuisance or dangerous driving, the Police advice is that they contact them directly, ideally with a record of the registration numbers of the vehicles. This can be done via the non-emergency phone number 101 or online through the Lancashire Constabulary website at:
