Stop closure of our respite centres

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to Stop closure of short term respite centres. Continue to keep all respite centres open to provide this vital service to children with disabilities and their parents/carers.

Lancashire is looking to reduce the number of much needed respite centres across the county. Short term respite is essential to keep families of children with disablities together and supported. Carers need this break, the children need the break.

Please support us and make Lancashire County Council listen.

Council response

The County Council recognises the value families place on short breaks, but is being required to review what type of short breaks should be provided, who should deliver them and who should receive them. The Council does not have a statutory obligation to provide short breaks, but it does have to make sure that short breaks are offered in approporiate cases.

No homes have yet been chosen for closure. In keeping with our commitment to make decision with our parents and carers the County Council will be embarking upon a process of consultation and will be facilitating a stakeholder group. This group will include parents/carers and young people working alongside those who use the residential overnight break service and those who do not.

In addition, parents who currently access the overnight short break service have been invited to meet County Councillor Geoff Driver (Leader of Lancashire County Council), County Councillor Susie Charles (Cabinet Member for Children and Schools) and County Councillor Keith Iddon (Lead Member for Children and Schools), with the intention of giving families the opportunity to ask questions, present their views and discuss the re-shaping and modernisation of the overnight break provision.

Regular information regarding the review and consultation process will be posted on the Lancashire County Council website.
