Reduce Traffic down Moss Side Lytham

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to reduce the speed limit down Lytham Road to 30mph, create speed bumps to slow down traffic and create a one way single lane area on Saltcoates road between Carmell Lane and Pegs Lane to reduce the amount of traffic coming down Lytham Road

This could make Moss Side safer for pedestrians which is important as residents regularly use this route to go to and from the railway station. It could also reduce the number of car accidents on Lytham Road, Saltcoates Road and Moss Side Lane as a result of people going down it too fast.

Council response

Thank you for submitting an E-petition with respect to traffic in Moss Side. The Fylde District Local plan includes proposals for the construction of a new M55 Link Road, linking Queensway with the A583 as part of the transport masterplan for the area. The provision of this link road will in time help to reduce the volume of commuter traffic using the rural roads in and around Lytham and St Annes. The construction of the new link road has been conditioned as part of the planning permission for the residential development which is under construction at Queensway and the Developer involved is Kensington. In this respect, constructive discussions and negotiations are currently ongoing with Kensington regarding the construction of the new link road.

In terms of Lytham Road itself, the county council has recently advertised a speed limit order for the road to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph, and the process is likely to be completed in the next 2 to 3 months. The reduction in the speed limit will aid road safety along the road and also help to improve the quality of life for the local community. As you have indicated it is a busy road and in this respect it would be impractical to introduce a one-way traffic system on the road. Furthermore this is not something that highways officers would support, as there is the potential for one-way systems to encourage speeding, due to the knowledge that there is no traffic coming from the opposite direction.

A one-way system would also be impractical due to the number of farms and businesses in the area requiring access, and is unlikely to have the full support of those who respond to the required District wide consultation exercise. An examination of the accident database shows that there have been no recorded injury road accidents on this stretch of Lytham Road in the past 5 years, which suggests it has a very good accident record.

With the above information taken into account, officers cannot support your request to make the road one-way..
