Traffic control at St David's Rd North, St Annes

We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to either install Traffic Lights or a Roundabout ,at the junction of St David's Rd North and St Leonard's Rd East, St Annes..

There have been many accidents at this junction over the years. This year alone at least three - one in February which my Mother in Law was involved in, when an elderly gentleman pulled out of St Leonard's Rd straight in to the front of her car writing it off. This month alone there have been two serious accidents both ending with cars on their sides. The road marking and signs including a recently installed flashing sign are completely inadequate, and require drastic action. I'm sure the cost of this would far out-weigh the cost to Police, Ambulance, Fire Brigade, and Hospitals, who all have to deal with the consequences.

Council response

Officers have carried out an assessment of this location and there is a junction of two urban link roads with a 30 miles per hour speed limit, both approaches are approximately 8.5 metres wide with shops adjacent and a primary school nearby. St Davids Road also has bus stops close by.

In the past, changes have been made making this a STOP junction with warning on the approaches. Double yellow lines and bollards have been installed which have removed vehicle sight line obstruction issues and the approaches to the STOP have red textureflex surfaces, with excellent sight lines.

While there have been a number of injury collisions reported to the Police, the majority of incidents are due to drivers ignoring the STOP instruction for which there is no immediate solution. Due to the continuing injury collisions and the exhaustion of local traffic solutions, we have put this location forward for a capital safety scheme which may include the recommendation of signalisation.

There are no funding opportunities in the current financial year, however, it will be put forward for funding consideration from a future years capital programme, when schemes are prioritised to ensure the greatest need is met within the limited resources we have.
