Two deaths in the past two years and numerous crashes, this road
is a 40mph limit but many drivers are over. This route comes up or
down a brow were drivers have lost control and is the main road
into Clitheroe. Both the footpath and road are used daily by
runners, walkers, cyclists who face the dangerous traffic as they
make their journey.

The current 40mph speed limit on the A671 Whalley Road is appropriate for the characteristics of the road which has low levels of adjacent development and few access points. The road has a continuous footway provided for pedestrians.
While reference is noted to collisions the county councils budgets are prioritised toward those sites where injury collisions occur most frequently and the road does not meet our criteria for the funding of traffic calming or further safety measures. We will however monitor the road so that it can be assessed for potential safety scheme funding in future years.
The council has inspected the road and the current speed limit signs meet current sign regulations.
The A671 currently receives regular mobile enforcement through Lancashire Road Safety Partnership operations. The road will be discussed with the police at the next Speed Tasking meeting, which is due to take place towards the end of May to determine whether any additional action would be appropriate.
There are planned highway schemes linked to nearby housing developments which include new traffic signals at the junction with the A671 Whalley Road and Whalley Road (minor link to Barrow) and localised widening on the approach to the A59 Roundabout.
