We, the undersigned, petition the county council to to put in place good quality cycle lanes along both sides of the A6 from Lancaster city centre to Lancaster University.

Those who wish to commute by bicycle on the A6 corridor south of Lancaster have two basic choices. There is cycling on the A6 itself, braving the traffic and roadside hazards, or else taking one of the two indirect and hilly routes for those fit enough and for whom commuting time is not at a premium. The limitations of either option reduce the safety or pleasure of the journey and so many potential cycle journeys are not made.

Good quality cycle lanes along the A6 would make cycling the A6 safer, easier and quicker. Lancashire County Council received £5 million to improve transport sustainability on the A6 in Lancaster and Preston. So far, apart from new bike stands at White Cross and support to the funding of cycle facilities at workplaces, there have been no tangible improvements to the infrastructure of the A6 corridor itself for the benefit of cyclists. Let's persuade the Council to do more and so increase sustainable travel in our city.

Council response

The Lancaster Highways and Transport master-plan which is due out early in the New Year will deal with cycling provision in Lancaster, including the A6 between the University and City Centre.

The Council will look at installing cycle lanes on the South Road section of the A6 between the Pointer Roundabout with A588 and White Cross when the Heysham M6 Link road is complete in 2016 subject to traffic modelling. The installation of cycle lanes on this section of the A6 would help prioritise cyclists on the approach to the city centre enabling cyclists get past queuing traffic.
